Formed in 2006, the Falsettos have become one of the hottest-tipped bands in the Tokyo indie scene, building a reputation from the ground upwards and energetically honing their live performances and songwriting craft.

Drawing on a wide range of influences from Joni Mitchell to This Heat, the heart of the Falsettos sound lies in off-kilter indie and alternative rock that invites comparisons with the edgy, pop-tinged melodies of The Breeders, the heart-stirring rock dramatics of The Flaming Lips, and the raw, postpunk simplicity of The Raincoats.

Having spent much of her youth in Europe, including a period in the UK, vocalist Miuko Nakao sings in English, but the Falsettos music and performances are expressive in a way that goes beyond words. They transcend stereotyped notions of what a Japanese all-girl band stands for, appealing to Japanese and non-Japanese audiences alike through their offbeat-yet-accessible songwriting and fiery live performances.

Thanks to a high-profile early endorsement from composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (also of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame) and the recent appearance of the song 6 as a popular TV theme song, the Falsettos profile has been rising fast among Japanese audiences. However, they have also proven themselves capable of reaching out to audiences further afield, having played alongside Brian Chase (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) in New York and gathering a steady stream of attention from English-language bloggers and critics.
